Set Up a Container File for Typical Details & Convert Project-Specific Details into Typical Standards

Walk through how to set up a container file for typical details and how to convert project-specific details into standardized typicals.

Updated over 2 weeks ago

If your detail library is organized within a folder server structure in Revit, you should download your typical details model from Pirros and use it as your primary working file. This approach ensures that your typical details template remains properly linked to Pirros.

Please Note: If your typical detail library is hosted on ACC or BIM 360 and is in Revit 2022 or later, you do not need to download and rehost the container file from Pirros. Your uploaded Revit model of standard details will automatically sync with the container file in your ACC. As a result, the container file will already include PirrosIDs for all uploaded views, and you can safely disregard the steps outlined below.

Link Your Current Typical Detail Library to Pirros

After uploading your typical detail library to Pirros, download the source model from the Management tab by following the steps mentioned below:

  1. Click Management at the top navigation bar.

  2. Click Source Models β†’ Completed Uploads.

  3. Click the download button on the right side of the screen for any source models with their Project Number set to Typical Details:

  4. Once downloaded, save the Revit model(s) to your firm's database to ensure that all future changes are made directly to this file.

If you have more than one Typical Details source models, we recommend merging them into one after downloading.

How to Build a Typical Detail Library from Scratch

In order to begin building out a typical detail library for your firm, you must first upload project details onto your Pirros database. See Add Project Details onto Pirros to check how to upload project models.

When your Pirros library is filled with details from multiple projects, Pirros will provide you with typical detail suggestions on which details show up regularly within multiple projects.

To see typical detail suggestions, navigate to the Management tab at the top navigation bar and click Pirros Suggestions:

You can use these suggestions to choose which details should become standardized and thus turned into Typical Details.

Change a Project Detail to a Typical Detail

To turn a project detail into a typical detail, follow the steps mentioned below:

  1. Navigate to Revit and open your typical details standard model. If you don't have a standard model, just create a new Revit Model using your firm's standard template. Click on the Pirros tab.

  2. Under Settings, click Project Settings. Set the dropdown to Typical Details and click Save: (This is communicating to Pirros that this Revit model is housing your firm's typical details) More than one (1) model can be linked to the Typical Details on Pirros.

  3. Click on the detail in question back on the Pirros website and click on the Stage for Download button:

  4. Navigate to Revit and click Pirros β†’ Download:

  5. Download the detail and make any edits necessary to ensure it's drawn to the utmost standard according to your firm. Once you are ready, click Upload β†’ Sync:

As soon as you click Sync, the detail will be uploaded back to your Pirros account as a Typical Detail. For more information on uploading details, see Upload Details to Pirros Directly from Revit.
