To promote a project detail into your firm's typical library, download it into your container model, edit it to meet your standards, and sync it back to Pirros.
Prerequisite: You need the Admin role, the Pirros Revit plugin installed, and a container model linked to Typical Details in Pirros.
Step 1: Identify Details to Standardize
Decide which project details should become firm standards. Look for details that:
Appear frequently across multiple projects
Represent your firm's best practice for a given condition
Show up in Pirros's Management → Suggestions as high-usage candidates
Search for the detail on the Pirros website using keywords like "door," "window," or "floor transition."
Step 2: Insert the Detail into your Model
Click Insert on the detail you want to promote:
A detail card with the Insert/Stage for Download button. Click it to queue this detail for download into your container model.
Step 3: Download into Your Container Model
Open your container model in Revit. If you don't have one yet, create a new Revit model using your firm's standard template.
Click the Pirros tab in Revit, then click Download
The Pirros plugin in Revit with the Download button. Click it to import the staged detail.
When prompted, set the project type to Typical Details and click Save
The Project Settings dialog with the dropdown set to Typical Details. This tells Pirros this model houses your firm's standards. Click Save.
Confirm the download dialog and click OK
The download confirmation dialog showing options for Use Pirros Imports for View Sorting (places views under PIRROS IMPORTS in your browser for easy access) and Prevent Duplicate Families (uses your existing families by name to avoid duplicates). Click OK to proceed.
Revit version tip: Downloaded details auto-upgrade to your current Revit version. To maintain compatibility across your firm, keep your container model in the earliest version of Revit still in use.
Step 4: Edit and Finalize
Open the downloaded detail in Revit and make edits to meet your firm's standards:
Clean up linework and annotations
Ensure naming conventions are consistent
Verify code compliance and accuracy
Step 5: Sync as a Typical Detail
In the Pirros plugin, click Sync
Select the detail you edited
Add a change message (e.g., "Promoted from Project XYZ, updated per 2024 IBC")
Click Submit
The Pirros plugin showing Upload → Sync. Because the model is designated as Typical Details, the synced detail automatically becomes a firm standard in Pirros.
What Happens Next
The detail is now a Typical Detail — visible to your entire team, prioritized in search results, and available for download. Your firm's typical library grows organically as you promote the best project details over time.
Frequently Asked Questions
Q: Can I convert multiple details at once?
A: Yes. Stage multiple details for download, import them all into your container model, edit each one, and sync the entire model. All changed views will be synced in one operation.
Q: What if I don't have a container model yet?
A: Create a new Revit model using your firm's standard template, set its project type to Typical Details in the Pirros plugin, and use it from now on. See How to Set Up a Container File for the full setup workflow.
Q: Will the original project detail be affected?
A: No. The original project detail remains unchanged. The typical version is a separate entry in Pirros with its own Pirros ID and version history.
Q: Can members suggest details for promotion?
A: Yes. Members can flag a project detail and add a comment like "This should become a typical." Admins see flagged details in Management → Flagged Details.
