How to set up a container file for typical details

Download your container model from Pirros and convert project details into firm standards.

To link your existing Revit detail library to Pirros and start converting project details into typical standards, download your container model from Pirros and use it as your primary working file.

ACC/BIM 360 users: If your typical detail library is hosted on ACC or BIM 360 and is in Revit 2022 or later, you do not need to download and rehost the container file. Your uploaded model automatically syncs with the container file in ACC, and PirrosIDs are already embedded. Skip to the "Convert a Project Detail" section below.

Link Your Typical Detail Library to Pirros

After uploading your typical detail library to Pirros, download the processed source model:

  1. Click Management in the top navigation bar

  2. Click Source Models → Completed Uploads

  3. Click the download button next to any source model with Project Number set to Typical Details

The Source Models page under Management → Completed Uploads, showing the download button for Typical Details source models. Click the download icon to get the processed Revit file with PirrosIDs embedded.

  1. Save the downloaded model to your firm's server or cloud storage

  2. Use this file as your primary working file for all future typical detail edits

If you have more than one Typical Details source model, merge them into a single file after downloading. One container model per workspace is recommended.

Build a Typical Detail Library from Scratch

To build a typical library from project details:

  1. Upload past project models to Pirros (see Uploading Projects and Source Files)

  2. Navigate to Management → Pirros Suggestions to see which project details appear frequently across projects

  1. Choose which suggested details to promote to your typical library

Convert a Project Detail to a Typical Detail

  1. Open your container model in Revit. Under Pirros → Settings → Project Settings, set the dropdown to Typical Details and click Save

The Project Settings dialog with the dropdown set to Typical Details. This tells Pirros that this Revit model houses your firm's standard details. Click Save to confirm.

  1. On the Pirros website, find the project detail you want to promote and click Insert

A project detail with the Stage for Download button. Click it to queue this detail for download into your container model.

  1. Edit the detail to meet your firm's standards, then click Sync

The Pirros plugin showing Upload → Sync. After editing the detail, click Sync to push it to Pirros as a Typical Detail. Select the views you changed, add a change message, and click Submit.

The detail is now a Typical Detail in Pirros — visible to your entire team and prioritized in search results.

What Happens Next

After syncing, the new typical detail is live on Pirros within minutes. It appears in the Typical Details view and is prioritized in search results. Team members who search for related keywords will see this vetted detail first.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: Can more than one Revit model be linked as Typical Details?

A: Yes, but we recommend merging into one container model per workspace to avoid confusion about which file is authoritative.

Q: What if my firm doesn't have a standard detail library yet?

A: Upload past project models first, then use Pirros Suggestions to identify which details your team uses most. Promote those to typicals over time. See You Don't Need a Library to Start.

Q: Do I need to download the container model if I'm on ACC?

A: No. If your typical details are hosted on ACC/BIM 360 in Revit 2022+, the PirrosIDs sync automatically. You can work directly from the ACC-hosted file.

Q: How do I add new details to the typical library later?

A: Follow the same process: download a project detail into your container model, edit it, and sync back. Each new detail gets its own Pirros ID automatically.
