Update Existing Typical Details in Pirros

Edit a detail in Revit and sync the updated version back to Pirros.

To push an updated detail from Revit back to Pirros, open your container model, make your edits, and sync. Pirros creates a new version and notifies anyone who previously downloaded the detail.

Prerequisites: You need the Admin role (or a role with the Create Typical Details and Edit Typical Details permissions), the Pirros Revit plugin installed, and access to the container model downloaded from Pirros (to preserve Pirros IDs). The container model must be linked to the Typical project in Pirros — if it's linked to another project, synced details are uploaded as new details instead of updating your typicals.

How notifications work: When a detail is updated, Pirros automatically notifies anyone at your firm who downloaded that detail into an active project within the past year. These notifications are informational — they do not automatically update Revit models.

How to Update a Detail

  1. Open the container model in Revit (the version downloaded from Pirros)

  2. Find the detail that needs changes and make your edits

A detail view open in Revit showing the area being edited. Make your changes — update annotations, fix dimensions, or modify geometry as needed.

Which plugin do you have? Look at the Pirros tab in the Revit ribbon. A single Pirros button that opens a docked panel with Browse, Updates, Sync and Settings tabs means you have Pirros in Revit. Separate Sync, Download, Settings, Pirros and Live Link buttons mean you have the classic plugin. Don't go by the version number alone: on Revit 2020–2023 the classic plugin can show a 4.x version number.

Option A: Pirros in Revit (v4.x, docked panel)

  1. Click the Pirros button on the Pirros tab to open the panel, then open its Sync tab

  2. In the filter dropdown, choose Recently Changed Views to see only the details you modified

  3. Tick Show Views Not on Sheets if you need to see un-sheeted details

  4. Select the detail(s) you updated from the list

  5. Type a description of what changed in the Change message (optional) box

  6. Click Sync N selected (N is the number of items you selected). When the upload finishes, the panel shows Upload complete, or lists any items that failed.

Option B: Classic plugin (v3.x)

  1. Click Sync in the Pirros plugin.

  2. Under Filter Views, select Recently Changed Views to see only the details you modified

  3. Toggle on Show Views Not on Sheets if you need to see un-sheeted details

  4. Select the detail(s) you updated from the list

  5. Type a description of what changed in the Change Message box

  6. Click Confirm

Verify the Update on Pirros

After syncing, verify the update on the Pirros website:

  1. Navigate to the Details page and search for the detail you updated

  2. Click on it, then click Open Full Detail

  3. Click History on the top to see the version timeline

The detail's History tab showing version entries. Each entry includes what was updated, the change message, who made the update, and when it was made. The most recent version appears at the top.

What Happens Next

The updated detail is live on Pirros within minutes. Anyone who previously downloaded this detail into an active project within the past year receives an email notification about the new version. The notification is informational — it does not automatically change their Revit model. They can choose to re-download the updated version at their discretion.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: I synced but Pirros created a duplicate instead of updating. What happened?

A: You likely edited a copy of the model that wasn't downloaded from Pirros, so it lacked Pirros IDs. Always work from the version of the container model downloaded from Pirros. See Understanding the Container Model for details. It also happens when the model is linked to a project other than Typical, because details whose Pirros ID belongs to another project are uploaded as new.

Q: Can members update details, or only admins?

A: By default, only admins can sync (push changes to Pirros). Syncing typical details needs the Create Typical Details and Edit Typical Details permissions. Members can flag details for review, and admins can then make the update.

Q: What if I need to revert to a previous version?

A: Open the detail's full page on Pirros, go to the History tab, and use the revert option to restore a previous version. This requires the Revert Details permission.

Q: Will the change message be visible to all users?

A: Yes. Anyone who views the detail's History tab can see all change messages. Write descriptive messages so your team understands what changed and why.
