Uploading Projects and Source Files

How to upload Revit models and source files to Pirros — both for new projects and adding to existing ones, from your desktop or directly from ACC.

To make your past project details searchable in Pirros, upload the Revit models that contain them. Pirros extracts every detail view, sheet, and family automatically.

Prerequisite: You need the Admin role in Pirros. Members cannot upload models.

Two Ways to Upload

Pirros supports two upload methods:

  • Local upload — drag and drop Revit files (.rvt) from your desktop or server

  • ACC/BIM 360 upload — connect to your Autodesk Construction Cloud account and select models directly

Both methods work for uploading a brand-new project and for adding to a project that's already in Pirros (see "Adding to an Existing Project" below).

Upload from Your Desktop

  1. Navigate to the Details page in Pirros

  2. Click + Add Details at the top right

  3. Drag and drop your Revit model file (.rvt) into the upload area, or click to browse your file system

  4. Click Upload

Upload from ACC/BIM 360

  1. Navigate to the Details page in Pirros

  2. Click + Add Details at the top right

  3. Click the Autodesk button to connect to your ACC/BIM 360 account

  4. Browse your cloud projects and select the model(s) to upload

  5. Click Upload

Note: Your ACC administrator must have installed the Pirros app in your ACC account before you can use this method. See Integrate with your Autodesk Construction Cloud Account for setup instructions.

Adding to an Existing Project

Already uploaded a project to Pirros and now have new or updated details to add to it? You don't need to start over and you don't need to use the Revit plugin. Two equally valid options:

Option 1 — Web upload (Source Files page). On the Source Files page (or via + Add Details), drag and drop the updated Revit model. When prompted to choose where to upload, select the existing project instead of creating a new one. Pirros adds new views to the existing project record. Existing details (those with Pirros IDs) get updated as new versions; brand-new views become new detail records. No duplicate project is created.

Option 2 — Plugin sync from Revit. Open the project model in Revit (the version downloaded from Pirros, so it has Pirros IDs). In the Pirros plugin, click Upload → Sync, select the new or changed views (use Recently Changed Views to find them quickly), add a change message, and click Submit. Pirros merges the changes into the existing project record under the same project entry.

Which should I use? Either works. Pick the web upload if you have an updated source model on disk or in ACC and don't want to open Revit. Pick the plugin sync if you're already in Revit and want a one-click push without leaving the model.

Configure Upload Settings

Before clicking Upload, click Upload Settings to control which view types Pirros extracts from the model:

  • Sheeted Details — detail views placed on sheets (recommended: always on)

  • Drafting Views — standalone drafting views not on sheets

  • Legends — legend views

  • Schedules — schedule views

  • Sheets — full sheet views

Most firms start with Sheeted Details enabled and add other view types based on their needs.

What Happens During Processing

After you click Upload, Pirros processes the model in the background:

  1. Extracts all views matching your upload settings

  2. Generates thumbnail previews for each detail

  3. Indexes the text content (view names, sheet names, annotations) for search

  4. Groups similar details automatically

Processing time depends on the model size. Small models (under 50 views) process in minutes. Large models (hundreds of views) may take longer. You'll receive a notification when processing is complete.

After Uploading

Once processed, the project and its details appear on the Details page under All Details. You can then:

  • Apply project filters (market sector, location, client, etc.) to help your team find relevant content

  • Add tags to individual details for categorization

  • Mark the project as Reference Only if you want to restrict downloads

Troubleshooting ACC Uploads

If an ACC upload fails or shows a "legacy version" error:

  1. Verify that the Revit model has been published (not draft) in ACC

  2. If you recently upgraded the model to a newer Revit version, republish it in ACC — Pirros reads the published version, not the working version

  3. Check that the Pirros app is authorized in your ACC account settings

  4. If the issue persists, try downloading the model from ACC to your desktop and uploading it as a local file

What Happens Next

Your team can search across the uploaded project immediately. Details appear in All Details and are findable by keyword, tag, and project filter. Over time, Pirros analytics will show which project details get downloaded most — strong candidates for promotion to your Typical library.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: How many projects should I upload to start?

A: Start with 5-10 recent projects that represent your firm's typical work. You can add more over time.

Q: Can I upload AutoCAD (.dwg) files?

A: Yes. Pirros supports DWG files in addition to Revit models. CAD details are displayed in their original layer colors. For best results, separate multi-detail sheets into individual DWG files before uploading.

Q: Can I upload PDF files?

A: Yes. PDF files can be uploaded as drawing sets associated with a project.

Q: I have new details to add to a project that's already in Pirros. Do I have to use the Revit plugin?

A: No. You can either re-upload the model from the Source Files page on the web (and select the existing project when prompted) or use the Upload → Sync workflow from the Revit plugin. Both methods merge into the existing project — they don't create a duplicate. See "Adding to an Existing Project" above for both flows.

Q: Will uploading the same model twice create duplicates?

A: As long as you select the existing project when re-uploading, no — Pirros uses the Pirros IDs embedded in each detail to match them to existing records and create new versions. Duplicates only happen if (a) you upload as a new project instead of selecting the existing one, or (b) the Revit file is a fresh copy that was never downloaded from Pirros (so the details have no Pirros IDs).
